In reflection-mode interferometric imaging, the measured phase arises from the coherent summation of fields scattered by individual scatterers and is therefore not necessarily proportional to sample displacement. This interactive HTML illustrates displacement-induced phase error (DIPE): the deviation of the measured phase change from the expected optical path difference under these conditions.
